La riserva naturale Cavagrande del Cassibile è ricca di rilevanze paesaggistiche, antropologiche, idrogeologiche, archeologiche e speleologiche. L’area si estende per 2700,00 ettari ed è attraversata dal fiume Cassibile (l’antico Kacyparis greco) che, nel corso dei millenni, ha creato una serie di profondi canyons. Nel fondovalle si è creato un complesso sistema di piccole cascate e invasi naturali (localmente detti uruvi), spesso balneabili. La quota più alta raggiunta dall’altopiano rispetto al letto del fiume è di 520 m slm, ma è nei pressi del belvedere di Avola Antica che, con i suoi 507 metri, il fiume raggiunge la massima profondità. Sempre in questo tratto raggiunge la massima ampiezza di 1200 metri. Nei 10 km di lunghezza del canyon, come detto, si possono ammirare numerosi laghetti, con acque fresche e limpide, fra cui spiccano per bellezza i piccoli laghi nei pressi di Avola Antica, accessibili al pubblico tramite una scala storica, detta Scala Cruci.

They call it the Grand Canyon of Sicily!
Well, its size isn´t really a match to its much much much bigger “brother” but regarding the scenery, the nature and hiking through it is – I think – nearly as much fun as you can get in the U.S. Grand Canyon.
Cavagrande del Cassibile is a protected area since 1990, the so called Riserva Naturale Orientata Cavagrande del Cassibile.
The big gorge of Cassibile creek, is located in eastern Sicily, south of the town of Siracusa in the Monti Iblei . It is a west – east running canyon, about 10 km long, carved into the plateau by the Cassibile creek which runs all year round and is dammed at the beginning of the gorge to gain some electricity.
The gorge provides an unique flora, some of the plants are endemic. Their splendour enfolds in early spring until june and some flowers might blossom after the first autumn rains in october / november.
The creek created two wonderful sinuosities and the path meanders with them. The second one, a sort of a natural amphitheatre is just beautiful. There is a path down to the creek and to the “Laghetti”, some wonderful bathing ponds with cascades between them where you can take baths.
Cavagrande is worth while a visit the whole year round – the most interesting season surely is springtime with all the flowers and orchids blossoming.

Das Naturschutzgebiet Cavagrande del Cassibile ist vorallem besonders interessant,
betrachtet man es unter antropologischen, hydrogeologischen, archeologischen und spelaeologischen Aspekten.
Das Areal, dass 2700 Hektar betraegt, wird vom Fluss Cassibile durchquert, der eine Reihe an tiefen Canyons ueber die Jahrhunderte gegraben hat .
Im Tal befinden sich kleine Wasserfaelle und Seen, in denen man baden kann.
Das Gebirge erreicht 520 m Hoehe. Der Fluss erreicht eine Breite von 1200 m. Ueber eine historische Treppe- die “Scala Cruci”- erreicht man zahlreiche kleine Seen, die man entlang des 10 km- langen Canyon betrachten kann.
